Supporting Single-Parent Families | Employment Support for Single Mothers (SDGs)
In response to the challenges faced by single mothers and their children during the COVID-19 pandemic, FUMIKODA launched a charity project to offer critical support. In Japan, where declining birth rates are a pressing concern, FUMIKODA envisions a society where all children can grow up in a nurturing environment, regardless of their circumstances. Through various initiatives, we are committed to addressing the harsh realities faced by struggling families, especially single mothers, and contributing to a sustainable future.
Activity 1: Donating a Portion of Sales
In celebration of FUMIKODA’s 5th anniversary, 10% of all sales from our online boutique and flagship store for the month were donated to support children from families in financial need. This donation, facilitated through the NPO Kids’ Door, provided essential support to help children in such households with living expenses. Through this initiative, we aim to provide relief and help improve the daily lives of children living in economically challenging situations.
Activity 2: Supporting Employment
Through the “My Future Project,” a women’s employment support initiative, FUMIKODA donated bags to women, including single mothers, who recently entered the workforce. For these women embarking on new careers, a FUMIKODA bag symbolizes the confidence and strength to take their first steps forward. This project exemplifies FUMIKODA’s commitment to empowering women and promoting positive self-image.
Activity 3: Hosting an “Eco-Bazaar”
FUMIKODA held an “Eco-Bazaar,” where we invited customers to donate gently-used women’s business attire. These items were sold at the event for 1,000 yen each, with all proceeds going directly to cover living expenses for families in need. This initiative not only supports families in challenging situations but also contributes to a sustainable society by reducing environmental impact.
Background: The Crisis Facing Japan’s Children
According to Kids’ Door, the poverty rate among children in Japan stands at 13.9%, with the rate among children in single-parent households reaching 50.8%—the highest among OECD countries. Financial hardship in these families leads to educational disparity, child abuse, and even child suicide, posing critical social challenges in Japan.
Our Commitment
FUMIKODA’s creative director, Fumi Koda, is herself a single mother and is personally committed to addressing these issues. From her own experiences, she understands the challenges single mothers face and is deeply dedicated to supporting both them and their children. This commitment led to the launch of this project, which aims to build a future where more families can overcome hardships and find hope.
Through continued support initiatives, FUMIKODA is dedicated to helping single-parent families find the hope and strength to shape a brighter future.
